Why Are Dental Hygienists Quitting?
As a “recovering” dental hygienist myself, and the “Director of Bravery” at the Myofunctional Therapy Training Academy where I entice bored, burned out dental hygienists out of the operatory and into a life she is bonkers about, I often wonder why dental hygienists are quitting on dental hygiene?
So I did some quick research recently and found this article reported that “the job can feel repetitive.”
(Gasp) 😳
You don’t say? 😏
Back when I was starting my hygiene career it took about 6 whole months for me to find the job very repetitive. Day in and day out I did the same thing.
Since you are here reading this, what’s your opinion? Why are dental hygienists quitting?
The article summed up the pros of becoming a dental hygienist as:
- You can pursue the career quickly
- You can make a good salary
- It has a positive job outlook
- You can have a standard schedule
- You can find flexible employment options
And of course, it also has the cons:
- Limited career paths
- The job can feel repetitive
- You may encounter challenging patients
- The job can be physically demanding
- Your practice may have heavy workloads
In this article I am going to introduce you to a world of possibility as a myofunctional therapist if only you have the “guts” to leave the comfort of what you know.
(Sometimes the body has the wisdom to force you out as well so I think it’s great to know your options.)
You can learn more about me and my journey here. But in a nutshell, I was bored and very unfulfilled with dental hygiene. I took a 12 week course that overwhelmingly underdelivered on starting a business, but none the less 12 weeks later I set a 5 year goal to get the hell out of hygiene.
I retired from dental hygiene in 13 months and have never looked back.
Here’s the pros of starting a myofunctional therapy business:
- You can pursue the skillset quickly (I had my first paying client at 12 weeks and students have paying clients as early as 16 weeks so far)
- You can make a good salary (I earned $125k my first full year and 6 figures every year after that)
- You are in charge of your own schedule…that you set
- You can work from anywhere
- You can work less (I work about 10 hours per week with clients and I have 10 days off every 14 days)
- No hygiene production goals
- You are not building someone else’s dream, you get to build your own
- Want time off? No vacation requests required!
- You get to be a more present human
- You can work in yoga pants
So what are the cons?
- You have to invest in a training program, which IMO is peanuts compared to skills you learn that will deliver for the rest of your life. (If you enroll in my program, that is. I know that many others teach you what myo is but no one teaches you how to implement that knowledge like I do.)
- You have to do the hard work, which requires getting out of your comfort zone. It’s not truly hard work but its not as easy as sitting back and doing what you know.
- You have to embrace/learn some stuff about tech!
- You have to be consistent and set boundaries.
I don’t think the cons hold a candle to the pros of having a profitable myofunctional therapy business. Key word here is profitable. There are many people who can “teach” you how to start a business but many of them aren’t knocking it out of the park themselves…so it really is just a hobby.
So if you find yourself Googling “why are dental hygienists quitting” it would behoove you to consider allowing me to help YOU build a life that you are bonkers about.
Whether you want to work less and earn more, be in total control of your calendar, or embrace the “work from anywhere” lifestyle….I wholeheartedly believe that learning myofunctional therapy and starting your business is a great way to set yourself up for an amazing future! Then you won’t have to worry about why dental hygienists are quitting on dental hygiene!

I recently did an interview with a new student into the program. I think she did a great job and offered some amazing insight into why she chose to build a myofunctional therapy practice.
