If you’ve ever sat at your desk thinking, “Where the heck do myofunctional therapy clients even come from?” — you’re not alone. Every single therapist I’ve worked with has asked me the same thing. And let me tell you: the answer isn’t complicated, but it does require you to show up with clarity and confidence.
I call it the Client Attraction Formula — and it’s the exact process I used to go from stuck and invisible to consistently booked.
There are three simple places where clients actually come from:
1. Friends and Family
The people closest to you should always be the first to know what you’re doing. No more keeping this work a dirty little secret. If you’re serious about building your practice, own it.
But here’s the catch: if Aunt Judy (who’s 80 and doesn’t have an email address) can’t understand what you do, you’re overcomplicating it. Your job is to explain myofunctional therapy so simply that a fifth grader could repeat it back. Try something like:
“I help people retrain their tongue and muscles so they can breathe, sleep, and feel better.”
Clear. Simple. No jargon. And suddenly, friends and family can either become your first clients or start referring you to theirs.
2. Referral Relationships with Providers
The second source of clients is referral relationships. But here’s the mindset shift: this isn’t about begging providers to send you clients. It’s about building trust with the people you already refer to — dentists, ENTs, orthodontists, chiropractors, speech therapists.
When your clients show up to procedures like frenectomies prepared, those providers notice. In fact, some of my strongest referral partnerships started because a doctor said, “Wait, what are you doing with your clients? They’re the most prepared I’ve ever seen.”
Confidence builds reputation. Show up, start conversations, and let results do the talking.
3. Amazing Results (a.k.a. Free Marketing)
Here’s the truth: there’s no better marketing than your clients doing the talking for you.
When Susie finally sleeps through the night, or her tongue-tie release is seamless because she was prepared, she’s going to tell every other mom on the soccer sidelines. That’s free marketing — and it’s the best kind.
But clients only get those results if they commit. That’s why I always recommend offering therapy in packages, not sessions. Packages create buy-in, help clients finish therapy, and lead to better results. Better results = more referrals.
And once providers start noticing those results? The referrals multiply.
The Bottom Line
You don’t need to master every marketing hack out there. You need clarity, confidence, and consistency. That’s the Client Attraction Formula. Start with your friends and family. Build those referral relationships. Deliver results your clients can’t stop talking about.
